Defying skeptics who maintained there was “no such thing as e-health,” Elizabeth Murray, who has died from cancer, founded the trailblazing University College London (UCL) eHealth unit in 2003. Described by one colleague as “a formidable force for good ,” Murray, who became professor of eHealth and primary care in 2013, led the unit which was to become one of the foremost in the world, creating highly successful digital interventions for people with diabetes, covid-19, alcoholism, and many other conditions .
GP and educator
Murray first made her mark in general practice and medical education. Returning to London from a break in Australia in 1989, a friend in a pub offered her a job as a GP trainee at the James Wigg Practice in Kentish Town, north London. She was accepted, started work the next day, and loved it. She went on to become a principal at the Lonsdale Medical Center in north London from 1991 to 2007, a role she combined with lecturing at UCL.
