HARBOR SPRINGS — The Harbor Springs Public Schools Board of Education recognized many of the district’s students for their extracurricular success on Monday during their regular May meeting.
The board heard from members of the high school robotics team as a part of the Mission Excellence agenda item. Superintendent Brad Plackemeier also told the board about the National History Day state competition and an honor for a member of the boys basketball team.
Several members of the robotics team — the captain, safety captain, and students who work in mechanical, design and programming areas of the team — spoke to the board about their season.
The robotics team — Baywatch Robotics, Team 7790 — just wrapped up its fifth year competing, making it to the state competition held at Saginaw Valley State University. The team captain said the team was close to making it to the world competition hosted in Houston, Texas, but didn’t make the cut.
The robotics team will be having an expo to show off their robot on May 23. The robot weighs 124.8 pounds, with the FIRST robotics weight limit sitting at 125 pounds.

Following the robotics team presentation, Placekemeier updated the board on the National History Day competition.
Four Harbor Springs students qualified for the state competition after the district competition earlier in the semester. The students’ projects covered topics like the Panama Canal, supersonic flight and the American automobile, for example.
