Dr. Suess Day, Principal’s Award and scholarship: Education news

ROCHESTER — Superintendent Kyle Repucci and School Street School Principal Suzanne Boutin share that students celebrated Dr. Seuss Day by reading and participating in themed activities.

On Friday, March 3, the school honored the author’s birthday as part of Read Across America, a week-long literacy awareness and reading motivation campaign sponsored by the National Education Association.

First grader Sophia Grassie (left) and Kindergarten student Leah Tobey (right) read books to honor Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Students marked the occasion by wearing shirts they could read. The day started with a breakfast where students were served green eggs and ham.

Rochester Police Officer Matthew Kimball read to kindergarten and grade three and Officer Alexander Howard-Koppes read to grades one, two and four.

Students teamed up with members of other grades to read Dr. Seuss books, participated in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR), and enjoyed cupcakes while watching a video of the Dr. Seuss Book “Sneetches.”

Teachers participate in the event during Teacher Switch-a-Roo, where they read books to the grade below theirs. The kindergarten teacher read to the fourth graders.

Second-grader Bella Bentley (left) and fourth-grader Bry Post-Flood (right) read together to celebrate Read Across America and Dr. Seuss Day.

“Everyone had so much fun and we always hope to create events like these that foster a love of reading and curiosity in our students,” Principal Boutin said.
